You know what one of the major factors in this is? Gun availability.The fatal shooting of Eugene police officer Chris Kilcullen on Friday is part of an emerging national trend indicating that gun-related violence against police is on the rise.
As of Monday, gunfire had killed 32 law enforcement officers in the United States — compared with 17 nationwide last year through April 25, according to data compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
A total of 61 on-duty officers in the United States died after being shot in 2010, up from 49 in 2009.
“What it shows is that our officers are at a higher risk than ever before,” said Rich Roberts, a spokesman for the National Union of Police Officers.
In each of the past 13 years, traffic fatalities have been the leading cause of on-duty officer deaths. But the uptick in shooting attacks on police threatens to change that in 2011.
You know who's to blame for that? The NRA and their supporters who have succeeded in maintaining gun control laws that are easily circumvented and inneffectual.
